The Big Match Revisited - Arsenal (A) 1977 - 2-3
Recorded this yesterday on Itv4

Feb 19th 1977.

West Ham United wearing their white with blue trim admiral away strip.

Two from Taylor and the other from Jennings.

Diving header winner from Taylor, should have had the hat trick.

Bonzo freshly shaven sporting a moustache, mentioned before ko by commentator Brian Moore.

Sir Trev involved in everything, also providing analysis in the studio.

Merv gloveless.

Crunching tackles, quagmire of a pitch, away support in fine voice.

Beautiful.

I was also there that day.

I remember Lyall getting our lot to wear the pimple soled Astro turf style boots on the frozen pitch for more grip. The Orient lot wore normal studded boots and were slipping about all over the place.

Needed hair of the dog at the orient game after NYE. Think it was 11 or 12 KO as well. We was drinking gold watch out of coke tins to keep warm. Haha. (Wldnt let alcohol in!)
75 - west ham in the middle under the roof, the gooners run out either side in the pissing rain. The white kit caked in mud and sparra taylor.
76 - went with mate and his old man (gooners!). Was in the NB up in one corner and it kicked off then as well. Gooners got run out again and were all near us. They tried to get back in, but didn’t.
Didn’t go the 77 one.
Went most of the others.
It was all just part of them times. ‘appy days!

FC.

My Dad told me to go in the clock end for safety's sake. I of course ignored his advice and like you was very nervy until i realised the place was flooded with our lot. Blimey, how different are things these days?

Wanstead.

Bloody right it was cold. Luckily for me my old man lived by Leyton station at the time so me and my two mates popped in there to warm up and drink all his beer.

As for the North bank at Highbury it was full of our lot when we were there for the FA cup quarter final in 75. Cant remember seeing so many West Ham in a 'home' end as i did that day. Give the Herd their due, they gave it several good goes at getting their turf back.

Been watching a few of these recently. The 5th round tie at home v QPR was played on an absolute quagmire of a pitch. None of the modern day namby pamby players would have coped. Sir Trev was gliding across it as usual. Great times when we had a proper ground, fans and football was a mans game.

Went on the Upton Park tour in 2013 and Alan Taylor took us round and I was chatting to him for quite awhile - funnily enough he brought up his header in this game! seemed like a really nice fella

AL - Yeh typical West Ham to get a result out the blue. Didn’t go this one.
Usually only had to walk in the NB and take it. And other times get in early. (smoke bomb game).
Lato- I went that one. Was fuckin freezing and ad an hangover. Think we gave em a full house? Merv ad a nightmare.

I was at this one, a remarkable win considering how poor we had been all season and were lucky, in the end, to stay up.

It was also the last time I witnessed good, old fashioned "end taking" when our mob "took" the North Bank Highbury. For those not initiated in the practice we filled the centre section of the north bank and held onto it for the entire game.

It was about the time when fan segregation was being taken more seriously with dividing fences coming in, though not many grounds had them.

I remember us beating Orient 4-0 at Brisbane Road on New Years day 1980......Merv was an O's player then and had a nightmare that day and must have thought he was back at Upton Park as West Ham took the place over.

Mervyn ended up with the old Dracula disease and his kicking went awry as well. Real shame.

Mr Day just wouldn't listen or take advice about staying on his line.

Just watched us get tanked by Sunderland at Roker park.
1977 we were just as shit then as we are now.
Just missed getting relegated that season but we fell through the trap door the following season.

I was there. West Ham took the North Bank by 2.15, (early birds we were), and it was mayhem in there, but we never came close to losing it.

Then on the pitch it was just one of those West Ham days. Expected nothing and got everything.

Awesome day out.

Something that surprised me was that Merv wasn’t wearing gloves, when did they become essential equipment for keepers ?.I started going 78/79 and I can’t remember if they wore gloves then or not.

I was in Aviemore that day skiing with Rokeby school. I was just waiting for the Arsenal fans to get the result and start gloating. It was bloody freezing.
